Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have been disqualified from Sunday’s United States Grand Prix after breaching the rules governing the floor of their cars in a shock end to the race weekend football
Hamilton and Leclerc, who finished second and sixth respectively in the 56-lap race won by Max Verstappen, were being investigated by the stewards following a plank wear inspection in Austin football
The original report from FIA technical delegate Joe Bauer stated: “A physical floor and a plank wear inspection was carried out on car numbers 16 [Leclerc] and 44 [Hamilton] football
“The skids located in this area are found to be not in compliance with Article 3 football

9 e) of the 2023 Formula One Technical Regulations football
I am referring this matter to the stewards for their consideration football
”Personnel from both Mercedes and Ferrari were summoned to see the stewards and, just after 7pm local time in Austin and more than three hours after the race finished, their disqualification from the race was confirmed football
Hamilton therefore loses the 18 points earned from his second-place finish, while Leclerc loses eight points football
Both drivers, however, do have the right to an appeal but it is understood Mercedes will not appeal the FIA’s verdict football
In a Mercedes press release, Hamilton stated he was simply “disappointed” with the penalty, while team boss Toto Wolff admitted “we got it wrong football
” The FIA note reveals that the cars of Verstappen and Lando Norris (who now moves up to second from third in the final classification) were also inspected, but passed the checks football

2mm and must be uniform when new football
“A minimum thickness of 9mm will be accepted due to wear, and conformity to this provision will be checked at the peripheries of the designated holes football
”The ruling means Williams driver Logan Sargeant earns his first F1 point in bizarre circumstances at his home race football
The final stewards report said: “During the hearing, the team acknowledged that the measurement performed by the FIA Technical Team was correct and stated that the high wear on the skid pads was probably a result of the unique combination of the bumpy track and the Sprint race schedule that minimized the time to set up and check the car before the race football

“In this particular case, the rear skid in the area defined in the Technical Delegate’s report was outside of the thresholds outlined in Article 3 football

9 e) of the FIA Formula One Technical Regulations, which includes a tolerance for wear football
“Therefore, the standard penalty for a breach of the Technical Regulations is imposed football
” Breaches of technical checks of the car often result in disqualification, with a recent example being Hamilton from qualifying in Brazil in 2021 football

Hamilton was already in hot water with the FIA for an unrelated matter, after crossing a live track at the last race in Qatar and was spoken to again in Texas due to his status as a “role model football
”Leclerc started Sunday’s race on pole but, opting for a different strategy, fell behind after Norris stole a march on the Ferrari at the start football
Hamilton, meanwhile, came close to victory after reeling in Verstappen - who was booed on the podium - at the end football
The 38-year-old has not won in nearly two years, with his last victory coming in Saudi Arabia in December 2021, but this disqualification will be a bitter pill for the seven-time world champion to swallow ahead of the next race, this weekend in Mexico football

England insist Tom Curry is ready for Friday’s World Cup bronze final as squad and management rally around the flanker caught in a racism storm football
World Rugby is investigating an allegation made by Curry that he was racially abused by South Africa hooker Bongi Mbonambi in the first half of Saturday’s semi-final defeat football
Curry claimed to referee Ben O’Keeffe that he was called a “white c***” by Mbonambi and, after a complaint made by the Rugby football Football Union, audio and video footage is being examined for evidence football
If the 25-year-old is picked against Argentina on Friday night it will be his 50th cap and attack coach Richard Wigglesworth is confident the alleged incident will not be a disruption as England prepare to sign off their World Cup football
“Tom is good football
I know players will have got around him football
Steve and the management team have been all over it football
I’m sure he’s getting every bit of support that he needs,” Wigglesworth said football
“I’m not sure you can ever put yourself in those shoes and know that feeling football
What I do know is he’s an impressive young man who, if selected on Friday, will pour everything into that England shirt as he has done on the previous 49 occasions football
“It will be dealt with by World Rugby football
We get stuck into our prep for Argentina football
The process is the process and we have no knowledge of how long that will go on for or the outcome, but we have to get ready for Argentina football
“Every week there is always some sort of thing you could be distracted by football
It’s international rugby, there’s a lot you could be distracted by football
You want to be in situations where there are distractions football
“This distraction is different, but it’s still noise that isn’t about Friday night, our prep and our desire to finish in the right way football
“World Rugby has been pretty vocal in following up things in the past and they need to do the same again football
”Tom is good football
I know players will have got around him football
Steve and the management team have been all over itRichard WigglesworthWigglesworth’s words were echoed by Ben Earl, England’s player of the World Cup who started the last two matches in the same back row as the Sale openside football
“Tom’s a brilliant team-mate, a brilliant friend of mine football
He’s also an incredibly resilient guy,” Earl said football
“He gives his all for the team and I know he’s going to be doing that this weekend football
I hope it all gets resolved very quickly football
”Wigglesworth was unable to shed any light on a report that defence coach Kevin Sinfield will leave England after the World Cup by mutual consent football
England’s defence has improved markedly during the tournament in France and they only conceded one try to world champions South Africa football
“There’s nothing that I’ve been aware of from Kevin, so it’s a hard one to comment on because it’s not me who the story is about,” Wigglesworth said football
“Hopefully there’s not much in it football
I’m sure that post-World Cup and down the line we’ll find out if there is football
“He’s a close ally of mine from Leicester football
We were two guys who lived away from the club so we travelled and stayed over football
“I spent a lot of time with him, and even more time with him through this whole process football
“I’m very close to him so I’m probably incredibly biased about what Kev brings but I’m sure the lads in the environment will tell you that he gives absolutely everything football
“He’s had a big impact on individuals and gives up a lot of his time to help football
We know he’s that sort of person and he’s done an exceptional job of doing it football
